Last weekend we packed our little farm up and headed to Lambeth Country Show (LCS) to spread the festivities through some real country creativity, wilderness workshops and affectionate animals. For those that didn’t already know, LCS takes place in Brockwell Park every year, culminating an array of animal displays, sheep shearing, flower and vegetable competitions, jousting, arts and crafts, all accompanied by soulful music from the main stage. You’ll be able to find us there every year in our intimate farm corner, away from the loud speakers!
Perhaps your first pitstop could be over in the country creativity genre. Our arts and crafts tables were flowing with smiling faces and busy hands creating colourful paper-crowns. The little ones were really giving the queen bee over at our Bee Urban station a run for her money.
Country creativity further flowed throughout our space in the form of face painting. Suddenly wandering children were transforming into wild beasties and no one knew which of our farm animals were actually ours…
The local spinners were swirling our alpacas’ wool into mesmerising strings in sunset shades and earthy tones. After learning about the process up close and feeling how soft alpaca wool truly is, many of you purchased bundles of it to crochet and knit with at home! We’re hoping to see some homemade alpaca wool hats bobbing around The Farm when winter arises.
Wilderness workshops took place in our main tent with our sessions covering sustainability and environmental impact, wildlife meet and greets as well as planting workshops with our special guest Julia Parker, author of ‘The Little Growers Cookbook’. Our groups walked away with new knowledge on how to actively make more environmentally friendly choices in their day-to-day life through interactive games and team-work exercises. Those lucky enough to be part of Julia Parker’s talk were able to plant their own pea shoots to bring home, and got in on lots of secret top tips on looking after herbs and vegetables.
Our good friends at Bee Urban brought their beehive along, offering a first-hand experience on bee ecosystems and their importance to the planet. Lots of you got a real taste of a bee’s life from our farm-shop stand, where their organic honey was available.
Of course, our very own affectionate animals were hanging around enjoying everyone’s company and caressing. Our alpacas and sheep got to strut their fresh trims, ready for the summer weather.
Over in our cuddle corner, our guinea pigs and bunnies thoroughly enjoyed some therapeutic conversations and comfort away from all the crowds.
The Farm’s bird community stayed safe over in Vauxhall, however some birds did come along with us to Lambeth Country Show in the form of a banjo-playing man riding a man-size chicken, and a hook-a-duck pool in our kids’ game zone. Disclaimer: no real birds were hurt.
And lastly, a special shoutout to our trusty farm cow Bryony, we couldn’t have done it without her. Not to mention our hardworking volunteers, solid staff members and of course our loyal, supportive community, aka you guys! LCS was proof of how magical our Vauxhall City Farm community really is, you lot are the driving force behind these special events, so thank you.
