About Vauxhall City Farm

This is an exciting opportunity to become involved with one of London’s hidden treasures. Covering over 1.5 acres of land, Vauxhall City Farm is home to over 100 animals and provides Londoners the opportunity to experience animals and nature without leaving the city. It also offers education and training to the local community and beyond.

Job Desciption

The post holder is responsible for the day to day care and welfare of horses, tacking horses ready for lessons, assisting with leading able bodied and disabled clients, schooling horses and supervising volunteers. This is a permanent position with regular hours to be agreed with the Riding Project Manager and may include occasional evening or weekend work.
Key Responsibilities

Animal Welfare

  • To care for the health and welfare of horses, ensuring the highest standard of care
  • To undertake the daily routine of mucking out, feeding, grooming horses and cleaning tack
  • To coordinate routine medical care visits such as farrier, saddler and vets
  • To maintain and regularly update health records, such as body scoring and weighing
  • To report any health concerns to line management
  • To administer basic first aid and liase with vets when necessary
  • To manage the exercise plans for the horses, ensuring they are regularly exercised and schooled
  • To work with the Riding Instructor to ensure horses are not exceeding maximum work limits
  • Work with Farmyard and Livestock Coordinator to coordinate feed and bedding deliveries

Health & Safety

  • To comply with and implement all Health and Safety procedures and report Health and Safety concerns to your line manager in a timely manner
  • Maintain a safe environment on the riding yard, paddock and menage by undertaking a daily risk check
  • Work with the Riding Instructor to ensure the medical first aid kit contains necessary resources and that out of date medication is exposed of safely
  • Poo pick the menage and paddock daily, ensuring the menage is cleared of poo between lessons
  • Rake the menage regularly to ensure a flat and safe ride for clients
  • To care for kit and equipment throughout the riding yard and report any damages
  • To work with the Farmyard and Livestock Coordinator to order bedding and feed on a bi-weekly basis

Customer Service

  • To prepare horses for lessons in good time and to the highest of standards
  • Assist with the fitting of safety riding hats for riding clients
  • Assist with leading in lessons for able bodied and disabled clients
  • Assist with the delivery of equine programmes and workshops
  • To provide excellent customer care to riders and the general public who visit the farm
  • To induct and train volunteers on the riding yard
  • To supervise and coordinate volunteers in caring for the horses, including mucking out, feeding, grooming and cleaning tack to ensure that the riding stables are well maintained
  • To assist the Riding Manager to organise and run programmes and events

Other duties

  • To perform any other tasks reasonably requested by the Riding Manager
  • Cover farmyard duties when required
  • To read and comply with all Vauxhall City Farm’s policies and procedures

Special Conditions

Ths position involves contact with children and young people. The postholder will therefore be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance on appointment and on an appropriate review basis thereafter.
