Animal Shows

Capel Manor Show
On the 19th of September 2009 the Vauxhall city farm staff, volunteers and animals descended on Capel Manor College in Enfield to take part in the annual City Farm Harvest Festival. This brings together all the city farms in London and the young people show the animals that they care for and compete for the coveted City Farm Animal Trophy. Vauxhall had nearly thirty volunteers showing animals in various classes. We won best sheep, cow, duck, chicken, and guinea pig as well as various 2nd and 3rd places.

At the end of the day after the tug of war which we won (and broke the rope) all the points are added up and the winning farm was announced. We all erupted into the air cheering our socks off when Surrey Docks Farm were placed second and we were 1st so not only did we win the animal show but also the tug of war. So well done to all the staff, volunteers and of course the animals for a spectacular day!

Tom Davis Farm Manager said ' firstly it’s a great chance to get our hard working volunteers out to the agricultural shows giving them a reward for all the poo shoveling that they do back at the farm, its also a great chance for them to see the range of rare breeds farm livestock that are out there, he added 'The other thing we are doing here at the farm is the conservation of native rare breeds of farm livestock some of which are rarer than the giant panda.’

Hatfield House Country Show

On the 21st-23rd of August 2009 Vauxhall City Farm attended Hatfield House country show that had a rare breed sheep show amongst other attractions. It was Vauxhall City Farm's first ever participation in a competitive show! The Farm entered five sheep: our two new White Faced Woodland Sheep as well as Espresso, Lamby and Lulu, our resident Black Wensleydale Sheep.

First into the ring were Lamby and Espresso in the longwool ewe class, in which Lamby came 2nd and Espresso came 6th so we were over the moon with that result.

On the Saturday it was the white faced woodland turn in the ‘Hill and Heath’ group. We had one in the older ewe class and one in the shearling ewe class, the shearling ewe was first and she came 2nd which was great. After her it was the older ewes turn and she won her class, her group and then claimed Reserve Interbreed Champion (the second best sheep out of the 150 or so that were there!)This is great news for the farm as we are trying to do our bit to conserve the countries native rare breeds of farm livestock.
